Yomi robotic-guided implant placement, Misch Implant Institute-trained provider, and same-practice care from imaging through final crown. About 15 to 30 minutes north of downtown depending on your starting point.

Implant Care Worth the Short Drive North of the City

There are dozens of dental practices in Indianapolis that place implants. Most of them place implants the conventional way: a static surgical guide, an oral surgeon at one location, a restorative dentist at another, and a hand-off in the middle that occasionally produces miscoordination.

SmileCentric is a Carmel practice that takes a different approach. We use Yomi, the only FDA-cleared robotic-assisted system for dental implant surgery in the United States, for the placement itself. Dr. Louis Abukhalaf, a Misch Implant Institute and Kois Center graduate, handles both the surgical and restorative phases. Imaging, planning, the surgery, and the final crown or prosthesis all happen at one office, with one team.

For most Indianapolis patients, the drive is 15 to 30 minutes depending on your sub-area. The trade-off — a few extra minutes of drive time for Yomi and same-provider continuity — is the reason many of our implant patients are coming from inside the city.

The Implant Dentist Behind Your Treatment

Dr. Louis Abukhalaf is the implant dentist at SmileCentric. His training stack matters when you are deciding where to have implants placed.

He earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry and biochemistry from Loyola University Chicago, summa cum laude. He completed his DDS at Marquette University School of Dentistry, magna cum laude. He then went on to two of the most respected post-graduate institutions in the field: the Misch Implant Institute, founded by the late Carl Misch, one of the most influential figures in modern implant dentistry, and the Kois Center, which focuses on advanced restorative and aesthetic dentistry.

The combination is unusual in central Indiana. Most general dentists who place implants have completed weekend continuing education courses, not multi-year structured programs. Most oral surgeons place implants but do not handle the restorative side. Dr. Abukhalaf does both, which is why patients drive in from Indianapolis rather than splitting their care between two offices in the city.

"Patients ask whether the drive from Indianapolis is worth it. The honest answer is: only if Yomi and same-provider continuity matter to you. For straightforward cases, a competent local dentist may be a fine choice. For complex cases, or for patients who want the planning and the placement and the restoration handled by one person, this is the practice." — Dr. Louis Abukhalaf

Yomi Robotic-Guided Implants — Rare Inside Indianapolis

If you have been researching implants in Indianapolis, you have probably seen claims about "advanced technology" and "guided surgery" on most practice websites. Almost all of those refer to static surgical guides made from a CBCT scan. The guide is printed, placed in your mouth, and the surgeon drills through holes in it. It is the standard of care, and it is fine for most cases.

Yomi is a different category of technology. It tracks the position of the surgical drill in real time during the procedure, comparing the actual drilling against the planned position and providing physical and visual feedback to the dentist. The dentist controls everything; Yomi adds an active layer of accuracy on top of the surgical plan that static guides cannot provide.

For Indianapolis patients, this is the practical reason to make the drive. Robotic-assisted implant systems are uncommon at general dental practices in the city. Some specialty implant centers offer them, but you would typically pay specialty pricing for them. SmileCentric uses Yomi as a standard part of implant care.

Implant Options Available at SmileCentric

Implant treatment ranges from a single tooth to a complete reconstruction. The right path depends on what you are replacing, how much bone you have, and what you want the result to look and feel like.

Single Tooth Implants

If you are missing one tooth, a single implant topped with a custom crown fills the gap and protects the bone underneath. The crown is shade-matched to your existing teeth, so the result looks like a tooth that simply belongs there. Single implants also keep neighboring teeth from drifting into the empty space, which is the silent damage missing teeth cause over time.

Implant-Supported Bridges for Multiple Missing Teeth

When several teeth are missing in a row, two implants can support a fixed bridge of three or more replacement teeth. Unlike a traditional bridge, you do not need to grind down healthy teeth on either side of the gap to use them as anchors. The implants do that work, which keeps the rest of your smile intact.

Implant-Supported Dentures (Snap-In Dentures)

Snap-in dentures clip onto two to four implants per arch. They give you the price point of dentures with most of the stability of fixed teeth. You can take them out at night for cleaning, but they do not slip or click during meals the way conventional dentures do.

All-On-4 Full-Arch Implants

All-On-4 uses four implants per arch to support a full set of fixed teeth. For most patients, this avoids bone grafting and shortens the overall timeline. Eligible cases can leave with a temporary set of teeth on the same day as surgery, then return for the final fixed prosthesis after healing.

Zygomatic Implants for Severe Bone Loss

If years without teeth have caused major bone loss in the upper jaw, traditional implants may not have enough bone to anchor into. Zygomatic implants are longer implants that anchor into the cheekbone (zygoma) instead. They make full-arch restoration possible for patients who were previously told they were not implant candidates.

Why Indianapolis Patients Choose SmileCentric

Patients from inside Indianapolis usually mention the same three reasons. The Yomi system, which is hard to find at general practices in the city. The single-provider continuity, which removes the coordination gaps between separate surgical and restorative offices. And the upfront pricing — every implant case at SmileCentric comes with a written cost estimate before treatment begins, with financing available for the portion patients pay out of pocket.

Indianapolis is a wide service area. North-side patients (Castleton, Broad Ripple, Keystone) typically reach our office faster than they reach an in-city implant center, because Carmel is closer than driving across town. South-side and downtown patients face longer drives but are still inside a 30-minute window for off-peak travel.

Getting From Indianapolis to Our Carmel Office

Our office is at 14560 River Rd, Suite 105, Carmel, IN 46033, on the east side of Carmel just south of 146th Street. Drive times depend heavily on which part of Indianapolis you are starting from.

From the north side (Castleton, Broad Ripple, Keystone, Glendale): 15 to 22 minutes. The fastest route is Keystone Avenue / Keystone Parkway north into Carmel, then east on 146th Street, then south on River Road. From Castleton specifically, take 96th Street west to Hazel Dell Parkway north.

From downtown Indianapolis: 25 to 30 minutes. Take Meridian Street (US-31) north into Carmel, then east on 146th Street and south on River Road. Alternatively, I-65 north to I-465 east, then north on Keystone Parkway, then east on 146th Street.

From the south side and west side: 30 to 40 minutes via I-465 north, then north on Keystone Parkway or US-31 to 146th Street east. Plan extra time during weekday morning rush.

Parking is free in the lot in front of the building. The office entrance is at ground level. If you are choosing IV sedation, you will need a driver — and on the longer drive home, this matters more than for closer patients.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants in Indianapolis

How long is the drive from Indianapolis to your Carmel office?

It depends on your starting sub-area. North-side Indianapolis: 15 to 22 minutes. Downtown: 25 to 30 minutes. South and west side: 30 to 40 minutes. Drive times can be 50% longer during weekday rush hours, particularly on US-31 and I-465.

Are there closer implant providers in Indianapolis?

There are many implant providers in Indianapolis. The reason patients drive to SmileCentric in Carmel is the combination of Yomi robotic-guided placement (uncommon at general practices) and Dr. Abukhalaf's Misch Implant Institute and Kois Center training, which keeps both the surgical and restorative phases with one provider.

Is SmileCentric a specialty implant center or a general dental practice?

SmileCentric is a general, cosmetic, and implant dentistry practice. The advantage is that you can have routine cleanings, restorative work, cosmetic dentistry, and implants all in the same office with the same team. Dr. Abukhalaf has post-graduate implant training that is normally found at specialty centers.

What insurance plans do you accept for Indianapolis patients?

SmileCentric is in-network with the major PPO insurance plans common in the Indianapolis metro. We verify your specific plan before treatment and provide a written estimate of your out-of-pocket cost before any work is scheduled.

Can I have my implants placed but use my Indianapolis dentist for routine cleanings?

Yes. Some patients use SmileCentric only for the implant phase and continue routine dental care with their existing Indianapolis dentist. We share imaging and treatment notes with your dentist when requested.

What happens if I need a follow-up appointment a year later and I have moved further south?

Once your implants are placed and integrated, follow-up visits are short and infrequent. Most issues that come up a year or more after placement are minor and can be addressed in a single visit. For patients who relocate or move further from Carmel, we coordinate care with a local dentist and remain available for consultation by phone.
