Preventive cleanings for north-side Indy residents at our Carmel office.

Preventive Cleanings for North-Side Indianapolis Residents

If you live on the north side of Indianapolis, our Carmel office is a short drive north on US-31 or I-465. Most of our Indy patients live in Nora, Broad Ripple, Williams Creek, the Meridian-Kessler area, or along the Keystone corridor. For routine cleanings, a 15 to 25 minute drive is realistic if the office is calm, the parking is easy, and the visit gets you in and out without delays.

SmileCentric is led by Dr. Louis Abukhalaf, who most patients call Dr. Louis. He earned his DDS at Marquette School of Dentistry, graduating magna cum laude, after completing his undergraduate work in chemistry and biochemistry at Loyola University Chicago summa cum laude. He continued his training at the Misch Implant Institute and the Kois Center, two of the most respected post-graduate programs in dentistry. While most Indianapolis patients see us for routine cleanings, you are getting that care in a practice built on the same standards we apply to the most complex cases.

Dr. Louis is a family, cosmetic, and implant dentist. The breadth matters for a hygiene visit because the same hands that plan a complex case are the ones reviewing your X-rays at a six-month cleaning. Nothing gets a quick glance.

“Patients who drive to us from Indy are usually not coming because we are closer than their old dentist. They come because the appointment feels different. That is something we work hard to protect.” — Dr. Louis Abukhalaf

How to Find Us From the North Side of Indy

Our office is at 14560 River Rd, Suite 105, Carmel, IN 46033. From most north-side Indy starting points, the drive is 15 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. From Nora and the Keystone area, you are looking at the shorter end of that range. From Broad Ripple, take Meridian or Keystone north and cross the Carmel line.

Parking is on the ground level. The suite is in a quiet office complex along the River Road corridor on the east side of Carmel.

What Happens at a SmileCentric Cleaning Visit

A cleaning visit at SmileCentric usually runs about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how long it has been since your last visit and what we find. Here is what to expect.

Plaque, Tartar, and Gumline Care

Your hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar from above and below the gumline, with focus on the spots that brushing and flossing miss. We use ultrasonic tools where it makes sense, which most patients find easier on sensitive teeth than traditional hand scaling. Polishing follows, which lifts surface stains from coffee, tea, or red wine.

Gum Health and Oral Cancer Screening

We measure the depth of the pockets around your teeth at every cleaning. Healthy gums show shallow numbers. Inflammation or early periodontal disease shows up in the measurements before you feel anything. Catching it early is the difference between staying on routine cleanings and needing scaling and root planing later. We also screen for oral cancer at every visit, which checks the inside of your mouth, your tongue, and the soft tissues for anything that needs a closer look.

If X-rays are due, we use digital imaging that takes a fraction of the radiation of older film systems. Dr. Louis reviews the X-rays with you on the screen, so you see exactly what he is looking at and why.

Comfort and the Technology We Use

If you have sensitive teeth, dental anxiety, or it has been a long time since your last cleaning, mention it when you book. We adjust the pace of the visit, use gentler tools, and walk you through what is happening in plain language. Intraoral cameras let us show you what we see in your own mouth, instead of asking you to take our word for it. If you have already had a less-than-great experience at another office, you are welcome to bring that history with you. We will work around it.

Pricing, Insurance, and the New Patient Special

New patients without insurance can book the $49 New Patient Healthy Mouth Cleaning, which includes a cleaning and polishing in the absence of periodontal disease. We also offer a $59 Comprehensive New Patient Exam that includes X-rays. Both are for new patients and cannot be combined with insurance.

If you have insurance, we are in-network with several major PPO carriers, which usually means routine cleanings are covered at or near 100 percent.

For patients without insurance, our Membership Discount Plan covers cleanings, exams, and X-rays at a flat annual rate, with discounts on other services. Ask the front desk when you book.

A Note About the North Side

For north-side Indianapolis residents, the Carmel city line is closer than it feels. The corridor between 96th Street and 116th Street puts our office within an easy north-bound drive from most of the Meridian-Kessler, Williams Creek, and Nora neighborhoods. If you commute to Carmel for work, the office is on the way home for many routes. If you do not commute north, the drive is still shorter than most cross-town trips inside Indy itself.

For Indy residents on the south, west, or east sides, an Indianapolis dentist closer to home will probably make more sense for routine cleanings. We are happy to be honest about that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the drive from Indianapolis really worth it?

Honestly, that depends on where in Indy you live. From Nora, Broad Ripple, or the Meridian corridor, our office is 15 to 25 minutes north, which is reasonable for a twice-a-year cleaning. From the south side or far west side, a closer dentist is probably a better fit, and we will say so directly.

How often should I get a dental cleaning?

Every six months is the standard recommendation for most adults. If you have a history of gum disease, smoke, or have certain medical conditions, your hygienist may suggest coming in every three or four months. We will tell you what makes sense after your first visit.

What if I have not been to the dentist in a long time?

Many new patients are in the same situation. The first cleaning may take longer because there is more buildup, and we may schedule a follow-up if your gums need extra care. We are not here to lecture you about the gap. We are here to help you get back on track.

Do you see kids and families together?

Yes. We see kids, teens, parents, and grandparents under one roof. Booking the family on the same morning is a common request, and we are happy to set that up.

What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?

A regular cleaning, called prophylaxis, is for healthy gums or mild gum issues. A deep cleaning, called scaling and root planing, is for active periodontal disease and involves cleaning below the gumline in measured pockets. We will not recommend a deep cleaning unless your gum measurements actually call for one.
